ESMO Open welcomes the association with the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO)

Correspondence to Dr Yuichiro Ohe; yohe@ ncc. go. jp ESMO Open was launched in January 2016. Since its launch, there have been 199 submissions which have reached a final decision. Due to this impressive acceptance within the community of oncologists, ESMO Open was listed in PubMedCentral within a remarkably short time after the appearance of the first paper (less than 10 months). Apart from important reviews of clinical relevance, many original papers were submitted out of which 15—corresponding to 9% of all publications—were coming from authors from Japan showing and proving the high interest of Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) to play an important role within the publication efforts exerted by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). Thus, it was only logical resulting in our pleasure to announce that JSMO has now decided to associate itself with ESMO Open complementing the former associations of the journal with various other scientific societies including the Associazione Italiana di Oncologia Medica (AIOM), the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and the Korean Association for Clinical Oncology (KACO). JSMO is an important society with over 9300 members comprising mainly of medical oncologists, but also of surgeons, radiation oncologists and professionals in other fields of oncology. More than 6000 people attend the annual JSMO meeting, with approximately 10% of free abstracts coming from abroad. Since the establishment of JSMO in 2002, JSMO has had a tight collaboration with ESMO including the adoption of the ESMO/ ASCO core curriculum, joint symposiums during ESMO and JSMO meetings, and an association with Annals of Oncology. Working as a partner of ESMO Open, JSMO will further increase and widen this interaction within the frame of global activities of both JSMO and ESMO. For all of these reasons, JSMO is warmly welcomed by ESMO Open as an associated partner and we hope for a bright future within this very context.
